Eden Locality is situated in the shadow of the Pennine Way, long the valley created by the River Eden. It  covers an area taking in  Alston, Appleby, Glenridding, Kirkby Stephen, Kirkoswald, Penrith, Shap and Temple Sowerby.

Eden is the second most sparsely populated district in England; its major population areas including Alston, Appleby, Kirkby Stephen and Penrith, the rest of Eden is rural in nature.  Eden makes up one of the six localities in Cumbria covering over 833 square miles with a population of 51,900 comprising of 25,700 males and 26,200 females. This equates to 0.23 persons per hectare and 10% of the Cumbrian population.

In Eden Locality we have two community hospitals:

  • Penrith Community Hospital which includes a Primary Care Assessment Service and Step up step down unit
  • Ruth Lancaster James Hospital, Alston

The Community Teams based in the locality provide services to the whole population, enabling patients to remain in their own homes, enhancing both their independence and quality of life. They provide services for the treatment of disease, disorder or injury, diagnostic and screening procedures.
